In July 2022 a friend shared a photo on her IG.
The photo includes her mother being sworn in as a citizen of the U.S. right in front of the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in DTLA.
The juxtaposition of Liberty and incarceration was striking. Learning about the experiences of being undocumented from loved the photo acted as a reminder to me how fortunate I am.
From what I understood, listening to loved ones’ experiences about living undocumented in the US can feel like imprisonment. This piece is meant to honor the stories of undocumented and documented folks that lived in this county without Liberty and what that meant to them and their families.
Special Thanks to Betty Avila for allowing me to use her photo as a reference for this piece.
Evergreen Cemetery is located in Boyle Heights CA. For anyone who lives in the area is witness to the Life that exists right outside of the Cemetery. The Juxtaposition of Life and Death is a beautiful thing to witness. The paradox transcends prejudiced attitudes to not just Boyle Heights but also East LA.
Dead or In Jail , Still Nowhere to go.
Something Over Your Shoulder.
A piece that depicts the timeless tradition of Police/Cowboys erasing brown and black bodies.
A portrait of the late great Coretta Scott King.
A portrait in honor of Ellen Ochoa for LatinX Heritage Month. Mixed Media: Photography and Digital Illustration.
